How this online teleprompter works
A teleprompter scrolls your script smoothly up the screen so you can keep your eyes on — or right next to — the camera lens while you speak. This one runs entirely in your browser: paste or type a script, set the scroll speed and font size, and press Start Prompter. There is nothing to install, no account to create, and no watermark on anything you record with it.
The prompter view scrolls at a constant, adjustable speed from 0.25× to 5× in quarter steps, with font sizes from 24 px up to 128 px, adjustable line spacing, and a content-width setting from 40% to 100% of the screen so your line lengths stay comfortable on any display. A reading guide — a subtle line or shaded box — marks the spot your eyes should return to after a glance at the lens, and an optional countdown gives you a beat to compose yourself before the text starts moving.
Your script and settings are saved in your browser between sessions, and the script itself is never uploaded to a server — you can close the tab mid-rehearsal and pick up exactly where you left off.
Mirror mode for beam-splitter teleprompter rigs
A hardware teleprompter is a sheet of beam-splitter glass mounted at 45 degrees in front of the lens, reflecting a screen that lies flat below it. You look through the glass into the camera while the reflected script floats over the lens — but a reflection reverses the image, so the software has to flip the text before the mirror flips it back.
To set this up here: put your phone or tablet under the glass, open the prompter, and enable horizontal mirroring (the flip button in the prompter toolbar, or the Mirror Mode toggle in settings). The on-screen text will look backwards to the naked eye and read correctly through the glass. Some hoods use a second mirror that also inverts the image top-to-bottom — there is an independent vertical flip for those rigs, and touch scrolling automatically reverses direction to match so dragging the text still feels natural.
No beam splitter? You can still keep your eye line honest: run the prompter fullscreen on a laptop or phone placed directly below (or beside) the webcam, narrow the content width so your eyes travel less, and put the camera far enough back that small eye movements disappear.
Voice-controlled scrolling
Voice control turns the prompter into a hands-free autocue that follows you instead of the other way around. Enable the microphone in the prompter toolbar and start reading: while you are speaking, the script scrolls; when you stop, it waits. After a configurable window of silence — two seconds by default — the scroll pauses, and it resumes the moment you start talking again.
This is the natural mode for presenters who ad-lib: you can leave the script to expand on a point, and the prompter simply pauses until you come back to it. It also removes the classic teleprompter failure where the text runs ahead of a flubbed line — stop talking, and the prompter stops with you.
Voice control uses your browser’s built-in speech recognition, so it needs microphone permission and currently works best in Chrome and Edge. The recognition is only used as a play/pause signal — your script is never sent anywhere.
Recording setup: speed, sizing, and keyboard control
Most people read comfortably on camera at roughly 130–160 words per minute. The editor shows a live word count and an estimated read time for your script, so you can trim to fit a target video length before you ever hit record. Then match the scroll: start the prompter, read at your natural pace, and nudge the speed until the reading guide keeps meeting your eyes.
Everything important is on the keyboard so you never have to reach for the mouse mid-take: Space plays and pauses, the up and down arrows adjust speed in quarter steps, R restarts from the top, F toggles fullscreen, and Escape returns to the editor. From the editor, Ctrl+Space launches the prompter directly.
On phones and tablets the screen is kept awake automatically while prompting, a progress bar tracks how far through the script you are, and a timer overlay shows either elapsed time or a countdown against your estimated read time. In a dark studio, the optional text glow keeps letterforms crisp against the black background.
Scripts: importing, formatting, and custom fonts
Bring scripts in the format you already write them: drop a .txt, .md, or Word .docx file straight onto the editor, or use the import button. Formatting survives the trip — the editor understands Markdown-style markup, so # headings render as highlighted section titles you can spot at a glance mid-scroll, **bold** marks emphasis, and *italics* work for stage directions.
Text in [square brackets] becomes a visual cue badge — write [PAUSE], [SMILE], or [SHOW DEMO] and it renders as a highlighted tag instead of prose, so you get direction without accidentally reading it aloud.
If the built-in typefaces don’t work for you, upload your own font file (.ttf, .otf, .woff, or .woff2) — useful for dyslexia-friendly typefaces like OpenDyslexic, or for matching a brand style guide in behind-the-scenes footage.
